Journey to the Center of Hawkthorne is a 2D side-scrolling platformer created by the independent hawkthorne collective, inspired directly by the “Digital Estate Planning” episode of NBC’s sitcom Community in which the study group plays an 8-bit adventure inside a custom-built video game. Built on the lightweight, cross-platform LÖVE framework, the title recreates the pixel-art aesthetic and cooperative quest structure portrayed on screen, placing players in the role of the show’s seven main characters as they descend through the multi-level kingdom of Hawkthorne to recover the heir’s inheritance. Each protagonist retains signature abilities—such as Abed’s faster run or Troy’s enhanced jump—encouraging experimentation across the map’s branching caverns, castles, forests and underground cities. Beyond faithful recreation, the project expands the fictional cartridge into a full-length indie experience: secret areas, collectible coins, weapon upgrades, boss fights and four-player local co-op extend play time well beyond the episode’s 22-minute runtime. Version 1.1.0, the only public release to date, polishes collision detection, adds extra music tracks composed in a retro 16-bit style, and supplies a level editor so that users can design new stages and share them online. Because the assets and code remain open under permissive licensing, the community continues to supply patched sprites, additional costumes and new enemy types that can be dropped into the /mods folder without recompiling. Categorized among fan-made freeware platformers, the game runs on Windows, macOS and Linux while occupying roughly 120 MB once unpacked. Journey to the Center of Hawkthorne is available for free on get.nero.com, with downloads provided via trusted Windows package sources such as winget, always delivering the latest version and supporting batch installation of multiple applications.
